WORKSHOP #22: "Choral Music: Relying on the Kindness of Strangers"

If you receive The American Organist magazine, you may have seen an article by David Puderbaugh entitled "Micro-works by Macro-composers: Music of the Greats for Small Church Choirs." By the length of that title, you might assume that the writer is inflating the importance of his subject matter. But you would be wrong. This is an excellent article and a resource that choir directors should keep in a place where they can remember that they have it and can find it when they need it!

I've been blessed in that I haven't had to direct many choirs and when I have they've generally been full of strong singers. But I can remember at least one situation where the usual Sunday makeup of the choir was two Sopranos and one Alto and I could have used this article's repertoire suggestions. Instead, what I did was rely on what had worked in the past under previous directors. And that's OK. Especially in the beginning, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. It's OK to rely on others.

What I've attempted to accomplish with this workshop is to extend the generous nature of Puderbaugh's article by doing your legwork for you (more like finger work!) and locate links to the titles he recommends. Because I'm building on what must have been a great deal of work by Mr. Puderbaugh, I'd like to do a big advertisement for him right now. Here goes:

"David Puderbaugh is assistant director of Choral Activities at The University of Iowa, where he conducts Camerata, teaches graduate choral literature, and assists in administration of the choral program."
http://www.uiowa.edu/~music/bios/CONDpuderbaugh.htm
David also serves as Music Director of Chamber Singers of Iowa City.

Now, on to the music. Please note, I maintained the order of titles from the article however instead of starting with Advent, I started with Lent since it's right around the corner. Also, I have indicated where I was unable to find an exact match and, if possible, what the differences are. Finally, I have provided a link where Puderbaugh indicates a title is available through the Choral Public Domain Library. Just click "CPDL" where you see it.
