I just noticed these two anthologies today that I think you'll find very useful. The first is "The Complete Lord's Prayer for Every Busy Accompanist." ($12.95) The title's a bit much but you get 12 different arrangements of the classic Malotte "The Lord's Prayer," all in one volume. The arrangements are for voice with either organ or piano accompaniment in five different keys (E-Flat, D-Flat, C, B-Flat and G), plus solo organ and piano versions.
The second book is called "The Complete Ave Maria" ($10.95) and offers piano and organ arrangements of both the Schubert Ave Maria and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, each in three different keys and each of those with a choice of a piano or organ accompaniment. Solo piano and solo organ versions are also included for a total of sixteen versions in all.
Talk about being prepared for any situation! I wish I'd known about these books years ago.

I don't have much practice time so I'm always trying to find ways of using the time I do have more efficiently. As the Carly Simon song goes, "I haven't got time for the pain." The related workshop presents a technique I used recently with great success in learning the D Minor Fugue.

On Eagles Wings
Click here to visit the related Weekly Rampage
Hal Weaver, the organist at First Christian Church in Dixon, Illinois, who plays "the same pipe organ that was at the church when Reagan was a young man," played "On Eagle's Wings" for the June 10th Reagan Memorial Service at that church. This caught my eye because the solo at my church that Sunday was "On Eagle's Wings." I don't know what version Mr. Weaver used but we used the Michael Crawford version rather than the congregational sing-along original. It went over quite well and I was asked about the sheet music so I thought I'd pass it on.

Is the Fugue in B Minor (BWV 579) A-typical? No Answer!
(See related workshop)
There's no doubt about it, the Fugue in B Minor and I have been through a lot together. Between preludes and postludes, I've played it hundreds of times over the years. If the B Minor is a little bit "different," does that mean it's A-typical? Read on for the Answer -- or not!

When is an organist like a marathon runner?
(See related workshop)
It's no joke. Like marathon runners "hitting the wall," organists are sometimes stopped in their tracks by a measure or section of a piece. Using pieces contained in the volumes below, the related workshop offers a simple solution to try when time is of the essence.

J.S. Bach's
Two-Part Inventions
(See related Rampage)
I find Bach's Two-Part Inventions to be the perfect length for my morning sessions. In less than five minutes I can make it through a couple of them, usually the F Major and one other. What's interesting is that regardless of how little time I spend, it still seems to reinforce whatever extended practice I accomplish the rest of the week. I guess it keeps the blood flowing through the fingers or something. More...

Prelude and Fugue in D Minor (BWV 539):
(See related workshop)
The Prelude, performed on its own, would make an excellent prelude or postlude that's not terribly difficult to play. At qn=60, it clocks in at almost three minutes. Taking that tempo may make the piece too long for an offertory but you could always speed it up to make it fit.

Works of
VINCENT LüBECK
(See related workshop)
If you've never played anything by Vincent Lübeck, you're missing out. Lübeck was a contemporary of Bach although 31 years his senior (1654-1740). Lesser-known these days, he was supposedly one of the most prolific composers for organ. Unfortunately, only a handful of his compositions have survived. While not as melodic or harmonically complex as Bach's, Lübeck's works have an energy all their own and serve equally well for recitals and church services.
