"Significant Finding"
"The famous painting of J.S. Bach that adorns the BACHorgan.com home page is referred to in scholarly circles as the 1746 Haussmann Portrait and currently hangs in the Altes Rathaus, or Old City Hall, in Leipzig. For a quick look around Leipzig, try this quick link:

In the period in which this portrait was painted, it was not unusual for painted copies of a portrait to be presented as gifts to friends and family. This past week, a previously unknown copy of the Haussmann portrait was discovered in the Altes Rathaus. Apparently, a member of the staff had passed away and their basement office was being cleared out in preparation for their replacement. The painting was revealed when a cleaning person took down a curtain that was in desperate need of cleaning. Curious as to why the painting had been covered and recognizing it as a copy of the portrait upstairs, the cleaning person contacted management who then brought in art scholars. It is not known how long the painting had been hanging there but efforts are being made to clean it up in order to determine its history.

Music scholars who have viewed the painting are extremely excited because they say this copy of the painting presents evidence that suggests Bach may have had assistance in composing some of his later organ masterpieces. We will hear more about this in the days to come but if you would like to have a look at the painting in its current state, click the link below:
