Vol. II, No. 8

"Missing Bach Composition!"
OK, I'll admit up front that's a sensationalized headline to promote the Composition Free Exchange. But now that I have your attention, here goes. For his The Liturgical Year, J.S. Bach planned to compose 126 chorale preludes covering the entire church year but completed only 43. One of the hymn tunes that he never arranged for solo organ was "Erhalt Uns, Herr Bei Deinem Wort" or "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word." Here's the text to the old German hymn:

Lord, keep us steadfast in Thy Word;
Curb those who fain by craft or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from Thy Son,
And set at naught all He hath done.

Hey, it's not every day you can sing a hymn with the word "fain" in it. Anyway, last week I received an email from Chris Faddegon submitting his arrangement of "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word" and I have posted it to the Composition Free Exchange. Chris also points out that you can download a free music notation software package from I've tried it and it works well although it has limitations for more advanced users.

Also new at the Composition Free Exchange is Symphony for Organ No. 1 by composer Richard deCosta. After downloading the PDF files, you may find it helpful to listen to the mp3 files of the symphony available at his website (click on More Info). His website is well worth the visit.
