"Soles Repaired -- Heels in 15 Minutes"
Soles Repaired -- Heels in 15 Minutes. That's what a sign said on a cobbler shop that I used to pass on my way to work years ago. It always gave me a chuckle because it seemed like it could almost turn up as a sermon title on a sign outside some church.

I was reminded of that sign this week as there was a rash of inductees into the Organ Shoes Hall of Fame. Well, maybe rash isn't a good word to use where shoes are concerned. Anyway, two inductees in one week plus a nominee whose photos I am still awaiting with fingers crossed!

All this activity gave me an excuse to focus on updating the OSHoF page, something it has needed since I believe 2005. In addition to the new inductees, I added a new large photo of my old organ shoes. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Also on the OSHoF page are the winners of the 1st Annual "Ode to Organ Shoes" Poetry Contest from 2002. I bring up this bit of ancient history because the winning poem of the contest, composed by community member David Setchell, has been included in a new book by his sister (and another community member) Jenny Setchell. Jenny's book, "Organ-isms: Anecdotes from the World of the King of Instruments," is a must-have for organists.

"Organ-isms" is a handsome little book; it's been put together in a very pleasing way. And what a great concept for a book! Organists are famous storytellers and pass their stories on with pride. What organ student hasn't heard a crack-up story from their teacher?

While "Organ-isms" is lots of fun, Chapter 1 manages to impart the seriousness and importance of the organists' job. That chapter alone should be required reading for all clergy and music committee members.

Those are some quick impressions that I scribbled down. I'm still reading so a full review will follow later. Jenny's created an attractive website for the book that has all the info you'll need to order your copy. Order extras and give them as gifts!

Added is the website of Kanawha Organ Works, St. Albans, West Virginia. See what else is new!

One brave soul has submitted a photo to inaugurate the Community Photos page. Thank you Albert! Come on, submit your photos! These could be photos of organs, organists, churches, musical or whatever. Please provide a caption describing what's in the photo and please be sure the photo is yours and not something that you copied off the internet.

As mentioned above, newly inducted are the shoes of Ron Morgan and Marilyn Rabbai. I also added a new photo of my old shoes.

Have a great week!

Dan Long
