"Giving Thanks for Thanksgiving"
Last night on 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney had a rant on how Thanksgiving is getting squeezed out of the picture by people and businesses whose only interest in Christmas is money. Here's the link:
He's got a point -- there's no money to be made from Thanksgiving, not real money. So who is going to stick up for Thanksgiving? Not the schools. I can remember drawing turkeys and making construction paper Pilgrims. But now I think schools try to avoid discussing Thanksgiving beyond its historical context, likely due to the religious connections.
Churches generally do a decent job of honoring Thanksgiving. Of course, while we're singing and playing "We Gather Together" we have to keep one eye on the first Sunday of Advent, right on the heels of Thanksgiving. We have to do a bit of squeezing ourselves if we want to be ready for Christmas!
With all the busyness of this season, I thought I'd try to lighten our spirits with some holiday humor from Backwoods Home Magazine:
DON'T MAKE ME GO!
Thanksgiving Day was approaching and the family had received a Thanksgiving card with a painting of a Pilgrim family on their way to church. Grandma showed the card to her small grandchildren, observing: "The Pilgrim children liked to go to church with their mothers and fathers."
"Oh yeah?" her young grandson snorted. "Then why is their dad carrying that rifle?"
